Twin Peaks (Dois Picos) – 5 de Agosto de 2007 Start time: 06:00 +- 145Km (New Event)

Carlos Sales won the longest and most difficult race in cycling in Mozambique. The tenth race of the season began in Pequenos Libombos and headed of to the top of the climb of Namaacha and then continued to the top of the climb at Goba totalling 145km.

Carlos attacked from the start along with Imran Akuji who quit the break about 5kms into the race. Duncan Wyness joined Imran just after the climb at Pedreira and began the chase on Carlos. Before the Namaacha climb the chase group gre to include Imran, Duncan, Alvaro and Joao Antonio. Carlos took all the hot spots the race had to offer and was never caught setting a record time that will be very difficult to beat.

In fighting for points on the climb to Namaacha broke the chase group. Duncan Wyness being the best climber took all the honours followed by Joao Antonio, Alvaro and Imran respectively. On the way back down Joao Antonio lost the group. Meanwhile Rui Ferreira joined Abilio Matusse after the climb sharing the work towards Goba. Abilio was not able to hang on to Rui’s wheel.

Before the first hot spot on the road to Goba Duncan’s back wheel spoke broke and had to have a wheel change thus causing the chase group to stop the chase and split up. Abilio quit the race before the climb to Goba. Carlos was alone in the front with Alvaro chasing. Imran and Duncan joined forces at the bottom of the climb on the way back. Duncan suffered a flat after 135km and Imran then rode solo towards the finish. Joao Antonio suffered a flat and was joined by Rui riding together almost all the way to the finish.

Carlos finished in a time of 04:54:13. Alvaro Alves was disqualified for not reaching the turn of the top of the Goba climb. Imran finished second in 5:24:22, Duncan in 5:34:58, Joao Antonio in 5:53:55 and Rui in 6:01:39.

The next race will be the Tour of Maputo which will be three days of racing beginning on the 7^th of September with a Road Race, the next day will be an Individual Time Trial and the last day a Road Race.

Carlos Sales ganhou a corrida mais dificil e longa de ciclismo em Moçambique. A decima corrida da época teve inicio em Pequenos Libombos em direcção ao topo da subida de Namaacha voltando pela mesma rota virando em direcção ao topo da subida de Goba voltando para Pequenos Libombos totalizando 145km.

Logo ápos a partida Carlos atacaou o grupo com Imran Akuji que acabou por desistir da fuga depois de 5kms. Duncan Wyness juntouse ao Imran depois da subida da Pedreira e iniciaram a perseguição do Carlos. Antes da subida de Namaacha o grupo aumentou para 4 ciclistas Imran Akuji, Duncan Wyness, Alvaro Jose Alves da Cunha e João Antonio. Carlos arrecadou todos bonus da corrida e foi apanhado por o grupo.

A busca de pontos na subida de Namaacha causou s separação do grupo. Duncan Wyness sendo o melhor trepador desmontou o grupo, seguido por João Antonio, Alvaro e Imran. Na descida de Namaacha João Antonio descolou do grupo. Rui Ferreira juntouse ao Abilio Matusse na Descida de Namaacha trabalhando junto em direcção a Goba. Abilio não aguentou com o rítmo do Rui e acabou por descolar.

A roda do Duncan partiu um raio antes da primeira meta volante da estrada de Goba e teve que mudar de roda causando uma separação do grupo preseguidor. Antes da subida de Goba Abilio decidiu terminar a corrida faltando ainda 60kms. Carlos continuava a sua fuga com Alvar em perseguição. Imran e Duncan juntarão as suas forças depois da descida de Goba. Faltando 135kms Duncan o pneu do Duncan perdeu ar e teve que parar enquanto Imran pedalou até a meta. Rui Ferreira juntouse ao João Antonio que tinha sofrido um furo.

Carlos terminou a corrida em 4 horas e 54 minuots e 13 sgundos (4:54:13), Alvaro Alves foi disqulificado. Imran Akuji acabou em segundo em 5:24:22, Duncan Wyness em 5:34:58, João Antonio em 5:53:55 e Rui Ferreira em 6:01:39. Abilio Matusse não terminou a corrida.

A proxima corrida será a Volta a Maputo no dia 7 a 9 de Setembro, tres dias consecutivos de corrida. A primeira étapa será de corrida de estrada, a segunda um contra relógio individual e a ultima uma corrida de estrada.
