Hell of the South 108km - 16 April 2006. (Matola-Moamba Bridge-Boane-Matola)

What a day indeed. Twelve riders battled out the “Hell of the South” route on Sunday. The first 40km went smooth at an average of about 35km/hr, but after that we entered a lighter side of an abyss. Dodging holes for 40km was almost like the “Hell of the North” (Paris Roubaix) The grass was certainly taller than the cyclists on their bikes.

With barely 2km into the race, Jorge got a flat, Imran turned back to hand him a spare. There was no time to lose.

Hanging in tough was Rui, who began to set an initial brutal pace on the slight incline into the first sprint. The group was beginning to split way too soon. With a few hundred meters to go it was back again and then all hell broke loose … the sprint was on.

Tim Fair had his pistons (legs) firing in all cylinders from the word go, taking everything he could grab with his legs.

The big split came after the second sprint where riders were expecting a regroup. A protest was launched, but the commisaire turned it down. A select group of riders containing Tim Fair, Dave, Ernst, Werner, Duncan, and Peter set an unprecedented pace at the front making the second group chase them down. Success was almost there when the first one to have bike problems on this treacherous section was Imran. Then Vicente had a flat. Then Jorge followed up with a back wheel flat. The chase was off. It was now survival of the weakest, not the fittest, because the fittest were already in front.

The big surprise on the day came from Dave and Ernst grabbing 2nd and 3rd respectively. More surprisingly was Zeca who decided to call it a day with only 10km to go, after being very much displeased with the split after the second sprint and the 2nd sprint point itself. Powerful Werner was one of the strongest challengers on the day, rivalling Tim at almost every bonus spot. He still leads the G.P. Only four riders managed to reap points at every bonus spot.

The most consistent (taking top 5 at every bonus) bonus reapers were Tim (75), Duncan (28), Dave (20), Ernst (13)

Thanks to:

Richard, Colette, Messias and Yazid (my son for handing out drinks to the riders).

Your support is certainly one that we very much appreciate.
